St.
Paul's Cathedral is one of London 's most awe-inspiring
sights. Wren's original design for rebuilding. St
Paul's was based on High Renaissance ideas, but it
was considered too Italianate and too modern.
The marvellous
choir stalls and organ case near John Donne's tomb
were carved by Grinling Gibbson as part of Wren's
original decorative scheme. Next it is best to visit
the crypt, with Waren's actual tomb, a simple black
slab, and an audio-visual programme explaining the
history and construction of the building, from the
laying of the foundation stone in 1675 to the placing
of the last stone on the lantern above the dome in
1708. The crypt itself is massive, extending beneath
nearly the whole of the church. After the descent
into the crypt the next and most exciting part is
the ascent to the dome. There are 256 steps to the
Whispering Gallery. The circular gallery carries sound
round so that someone standing on the opposite side
will hear your whispers quite clearly after several
seconds' delay.
Sir Christopher
Wren's masterpiece, has played important role in royal
life over the centuries. Queen Victoria celebrated
her Diamond Jubilee in St. Paul's in 1897 and the
marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was
also celebrated there. On 4 June 2002, the National
Service of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral celebrated
the current Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.
